Year 1 teacher

Welcome to the Year 1 webpage.

We’ve got so many exciting things to look forward to this half term.

During this half term, we will learn about our topic, Amazing Animals. We will learn how to identify, name & compare common animals. We will learn how to classify animals by group and diet, and will identify and name basic body parts. We will develop our skills as readers and writers, learning how to write persuasive letters and riddles. In maths, we will be developing our understanding of place value for numbers up to 50, and will explore how to measure length, height, weight and volume.

Some of the things I’m most excited about during this half term include:

•             Carrying out a wildlife survey to discover what lives in and near our school grounds.

•             Creating animal art in the style of Piet Mondrian.

•             Learning how to code apps and programs using our new school computers.

•             Visiting Peak Wildlife Park to learn more about types of animals, their diets and how to classify them.

A few important reminders:

•             Reading bags should be brought in every day, with pupils' reading books and reading records inside. Taking the time every day to read with and listen to your child, and discussing the content of the text, will have a hugely beneficial impact on your child's learning and progress.

•             Pupils can change their books on Mondays and Thursdays. I check reading records weekly, usually on Wednesdays, if you would like to leave notes for me to read. If your child needs to change on other days, please pop in at the end of the day. If your child really isn’t enjoying a particular book, please let me know so they can find something more exciting.

•             P.E. takes place on Wednesday and Thursday - children should have a full P.E. kit in school, including trainers. Please provide tracksuit trousers during colder weather.

•             Fit for Fifteen takes place daily, for which children need trainers or pumps in school.

•             Homework is set every Wednesday and must be completed and brought into school on the following Monday. Homework includes daily reading at home, as well as online activities on Spelling Shed. Pupils may need support to complete it.
