Year 1 teacher

Welcome to the Year 1 webpage.

We’ve got so many exciting things to look forward to this half term.

During this half term, we will learn about our topic, Precious Plants and Tremendous Trees. We will learn how to identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees. We will identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees, and learn to observe plant growth closely using scientific equipment. We will develop our skills as readers and writers, learning how to write our own versions of popular stories and to write effective and clear instructions. In maths, we will be developing our understanding of the measurement of weight and volume, and will begin to develop multiplication skills using multiples of 2, 5 and 10.

Some of the things I’m most excited about during this half term include:

•             Learning about sculpture and making our own art using natural resources in the style of Andy Goldsworthy.

•             Planting seeds and carrying out an investigation into plant growth.

•             Preparing for the Tunnicliffe celebration through an art workshop and singing.

•             Learning how to use technology to produce artwork, then using these skills to prepare front covers for our topic books.

Important reminders

•             Reading bags should be brought in every day, with pupils' reading books and reading records inside. Taking the time every day to read with and listen to your child, and discussing the content of the text, will have a hugely beneficial impact on your child's learning and progress.

•             Pupils can change their books on Mondays, Thursdays or Fridays. I check reading records weekly, usually on Wednesdays, if you would like to leave notes for me to read. If your child needs to change on other days, please pop in at the end of the day. If your child really isn’t enjoying a particular book, please let me know so they can find something more exciting.

•             P.E. takes place on Monday and Wednesday - children should have a full P.E. kit in school, including trainers or pumps.

•             Fit for Fifteen takes place daily.

•             Homework is set every Wednesday and must be completed and brought into school on the following Monday. Homework includes daily reading at home, as well as online activities on Spelling Shed. Pupils may need support to complete it.
