Year 1 teacher

Welcome to the Year 1 webpage.

We’ve got so many exciting things to look forward to this half term.

During this half term, we will learn about our topic, Captivating Castles. We will learn about different types of castles, and will find out about what life was like for the people who lived or worked inside. We will learn about their key features, and study their defences. In maths, we will be developing our understanding of place value, addition and subtraction for numbers up to 20. We will also be learning about materials in science, and will find out how to name, describe, compare and classify a range of materials.

Some of the things I’m most excited about during this half term include:

•             Undergoing rigorous training to discover what it took to become a knight.

•             Designing and making our own swords, shields and coats of arms.

•             Studying Paul Klee’s Castle and Sun artwork for inspiration in making our own castle-themed artwork.

A few important reminders:

•             Reading bags should be brought in every day, with pupils' reading books and reading records inside. Taking the time every day to read with and listen to your child, and discussing the content of the text, will have a hugely beneficial impact on your child's learning and progress.

•             Pupils can change their books on Mondays and Thursdays. I check reading records weekly, usually on Wednesdays, if you would like to leave notes for me to read. If your child needs to change on other days, please pop in at the end of the day. If your child really isn’t enjoying a particular book, please let me know so they can find something more exciting.

•             P.E. takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday - children should have a full P.E. kit in school, including trainers.

•             Fit for Fifteen takes place daily, for which children need trainers or pumps in school.

•             Homework is set every Wednesday and must be completed and brought into school on the following Monday. Homework includes daily reading at home. Pupils may need support to complete it.
